Learn the safety and basics of turning and become certified for using the shop lathes. This class will help prepare you to get the certification necessary to use the shop lathes.   .


In this class, students will learn:


  • The safety and basics of turning  
  • Lathe components and turning tools
  • Tool sharpening and use 
  • How to perform the basic cuts on spindles: V-groove, coves and beads

During the first class, students will make a honey dipper.  During the second class, students will enjoy up to three hours of supervised practice with the support of the instructor.


Length: 5 hour class plus 3 hour practice session

Please Note: Due to Punchpass limitations, the schedule shows five hours for the practice session, but it is three hours.

Prerequisites: None


Membership RequirementsFor insurance purposes, this class requires membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association.  Annual dues are $35.  If you are not already a member, please join here.  For insurance reasons, all SDFWA classes require students to be at least 18 years old.
