This course is designed for students interested in developing their skills in hand tool woodworking. The course will be a mentorship experience where students study topics of their own interest under the guidance of two instructors. Our goal is to build a cadre of hand tool woodworkers who can assist future students in handtool mentoring relationships. By participating in the class, students will:

  1. Demonstrate proper technique for accurate layout;
  2. Demonstrate proper technique when using chisels, hand saws and planes;
  3. Demonstrate technique for chisel/plane sharpening and plane set up;
  4. Demonstrate layout and techniques for making at least one woodworking joint;
  5. Develop a personal Action Plan for further development of hand tool skills.

Note: The following tools are required to participate in the course: combination square; double square; saddle square; marking knife; chisels: 1⁄4, 3/8,1/2, 3⁄4; block plane (low angle block plane preferred); #4 or #5 plane; Japanese Dozuki saw or English backsaw.  The instructors would be happy to guide students if they wish to purchase new tools.  If you have questions about tools, please contact the instructor for more information.
