This class provides a foundation for beginning woodworkers. Students will learn and practice workshop fundamentals during the five class sessions. Each class session is four hours.


During the first two sessions, students will:

• Understand essential wood technology concepts of grain

• Describe basic woodshop safety principles.

• Demonstrate safe operation of the table saw, jointer, miter saw, and planer.

• Demonstrate rip and cross-cutting techniques on the table saw.

• List three elements of glue selection and use.

• Demonstrate clamping techniques.

• Glue up and finish one cutting board.


Upon completion of the first two sessions, the students will have a cutting board to take home.


The subsequent three sessions provide a project to practice their newly acquired skills. Students will build a step stool that requires students to learn and execute additional woodworking procedures.  The students will:

• Operate a drill press, router table, drum sander, and other stationary sanding machines safely.

• Square lumber

• Use measuring and marking devices

• Sand and prepare a project for finishing

• Assemble a project using specialty hardware

• Shape rounded corners using a disk sander

• Apply a finish to their project


Upon completion of the class, the students will have a cutting board and a small stool to take home.


Class Schedule: Five four-hour shop sessions

For insurance reasons, all SDFWA classes require students to be at least 18 years old.

Membership Requirements: For insurance purposes, this class requires membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association.  Annual dues are $35.  If you are not already a member, please join here: https://app.punchpass.com/courses/%3Ca%20data-fr-linked=">https://sdfwa.org/memberships


Cost: $500*


Attendance: Please plan on attending all five classes; don't sign up if you have a scheduling conflict with any of the classes!


Refund policy:

  1. Up to two weeks notice: Full refund
  2. Up to one week notice: 50% refund
  3. Less than one week notice or failure to appear: No refund or credit
  4. Class canceled: Full refund

If a class does not have an adequate number of registered students one week prior to the posted start date, the class may be canceled.
