Class length

Using a computer to precisely control a router to cut and engrave wood is at the heart of
CNC. The Shop acquired a Shapeoko 3 and Shapeoko 3 XXL CNC which is capable of
milling wood up to 33” x 33” in size. This class will teach you how to competently, confidently
and safely use this tool with your woodworking projects
.
This course is designed for individuals with no CNC experience. You will learn the basics of
CNC, the workflow for using CNC, some elementary CNC design, and safe operation of our
Shapeoko CNC. This CNC Introduction class is more comprehensive than the CNC Basics
Intro in that there is more time spent on design, more varied projects are completed, more
bits and toolpaths are covered, and it's done using the industry standard of VCarve Pro, but it
takes twice as long.

The key to this class is practice. You will use the CNC from the very first session and by the
end you will have completed five projects. To design your projects and to define your cuts
you will receive a license to Vectrics’ VCarve Pro (Windows-only) for use on the Shop CNC.
Our goal in this course is to build confidence through practice. Consequently, as a Shop
Member you will receive three  EXTRA Shop slots so that you have extra time to
practice during and after the course.

A CNC is a computer-controlled tool so we require proficiency with Microsoft Windows.
Familiarity with computer design is desired but not required. There may be homework prior to
each of the four 4-hour class sessions. Lastly, before receiving your Shop certification for
independent use of the Shop CNC you will complete an independent project. The "CNC Intro"
class is now available to both SDFWA Shop Members and non-Members though SDFWA
Membership is required for insurance coverage ($35/year)
.
When you complete this class you will have the confidence and competence to design and
cut wood safely using a Shapeoko CNC.
If you really want to know CNC then this is the class for you. Cost: $350
