Knowledge and skills of hand tools are essential for all woodworkers, even those who rely mostly on woodworking machines.  This course is designed for woodworkers at any skill level who wish to learn how to purchase, set up, and use hand tools: layout equipment, hand planes, saws and chisels.


  • Demonstrate use of marking gauge and marking knife.
  • Demonstrate how to disassemble, reassemble and set-up a smoothing plane.
  • Demonstrate proper body position when using hand planes, saws and chisels.
  • Demonstrate how to make chopping and paring cuts using bench chisels.
  • Discuss pros and cons of different hand tool buying strategies.


Class Schedule: One, 4-hour session

Membership RequirementsFor insurance purposes, this class requires membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association.  Annual dues are $35.  If you are not already a member, please join here: https://sdfwa.org/memberships  For insurance reasons, all SDFWA classes require students to be at least 18 years old.

If a class does not have an adequate number of registered students one week prior to the posted start date, the class may be canceled.
